About the Artist
Sharon Black is a self-taught abstract artist working from her home studio in Fate, Texas. Her work lives in the space between structure and impulse, memory and resilience.
Raised in Oklahoma, she developed an early sensitivity to landscape, weather, and the quiet strength required to endure change. These elements continue to echo through her work. She spent most of her adult life in the Dallas area, where she built both her artistic practice and her family. A strong, independent entrepreneur and single mother of two, Black forged her path with determination and self-reliance, often without the support of extended family. This lived experience of perseverance, responsibility, and self-trust forms the emotional backbone of her art. Her paintings do not announce struggle; they embody survival through restraint, patience, and resolve.
Working primarily in mixed media, Black builds her compositions through layering, erasure, and repetition. Grids dissolve into gestural line. Dense fields of pigment open into exposed ground. The surfaces feel earned, worked and reworked, carrying traces of time, touch, and lived experience. Order and disruption coexist, reflecting a life shaped by both discipline and improvisation. Jazz and the natural world are constant sources of inspiration, their rhythms and textures finding their way into her process.
Her visual language suggests emotional cartography and quiet archaeology. Symbols recur, textures hold memory, and meaning remains intentionally open-ended. Viewers are invited to engage intuitively, allowing their own histories to surface within the work.
Sharon Black's art is contemplative rather than declarative. It values process over polish and resilience over resolution. Each piece stands as a record of inquiry, and of a life built with intention, strength, and an unwavering commitment to moving forward.
